Changing your name

Bring the document. That is the whole requirement, and it is where people come unstuck: NZTA needs the legal instrument that created the change, not evidence that everyone now calls you something else.

Acceptable documents are the obvious ones — a marriage or civil union certificate, a dissolution order, a deed poll, a name change certificate from Births, Deaths and Marriages, or an updated citizenship document. Originals, not photographs on your phone. Bring acceptable identity documents as well, because the agent is verifying who you are as part of the transaction, not just what you are called.

You will have a new photograph taken and be issued a new card, usually with a temporary document to drive on in the meantime. The class, the conditions and the expiry date carry across unchanged. Fees are set by NZTA and where to find the current ones is on the fees page — and if your licence is close to expiring anyway, say so at the counter, because doing the name change as part of a renewal may mean paying once instead of twice.

Changing your address

This is the update almost everyone postpones, and it has a specific, predictable consequence: renewal reminders go to the old address. People then find out their licence expired months ago, usually at a roadside stop, and "I never got the reminder" is not a defence to driving unlicensed.

Your address on the register is also the route by which NZTA reaches you about anything else touching your licence — medical review correspondence, endorsement expiry, anything administrative. None of that reaches a flat you moved out of two years ago.

The thing to be careful about is scope. Your driver licence record and the records held against vehicles you own are different things, even though NZTA holds both. Depending on which channel you use to update, one may be covered and the other not. NZTA's updating your licence page sets out which channels exist and what each one covers. Read that rather than assuming a single update propagates everywhere, and handle the vehicle side deliberately — changing the address on a vehicle record is its own transaction with its own consequences, including where infringement notices land.

Other details that can be wrong

Your date of birth or the spelling of your name is wrong on the card. This is not a change of details, it is a correction of an error, and it is worth saying so at the counter because the treatment differs. Take the identity documents showing the correct information.

Your photograph no longer resembles you. There is no obligation to update a photograph between renewals, but a card that does not look like you is a card that gets queried at rental desks, at airports and by anyone verifying your age. You can apply for a replacement card at any time if it has become a practical problem.

Your conditions have changed. If your vision has changed enough that you now need corrective lenses to drive, or no longer need them, that is a condition on the licence rather than a detail on the card. It is dealt with through the eyesight and medical route, not by asking an agent to reprint the card.

A health change that affects your driving. This has to be declared to NZTA rather than waiting for the next renewal. The usual outcome is a condition recorded on the licence rather than the loss of it, but the obligation to tell them is not discretionary.

Do it when something else prompts it

The realistic advice here is not "update your details promptly", because nobody does. It is to attach the update to a moment you are already dealing with paperwork: when you renew, when you replace a lost card, when you buy or sell a vehicle, or when you change your address with IRD and the bank. Those are the moments the information is in front of you and the documents are out of the drawer.
