Short answer

NZTA operates electronic tolling on three roads: Northern Gateway, Tauranga Eastern Link and Takitimu Drive. There are no cash booths. Pay through NZTA's official tolling service or use an account. The legal terms say to pay at the toll point but allow five working days before enforcement; the current online payment service says it can accept a trip up to ten days after use. Pay within five working days rather than planning around the longer portal window.

New Zealand toll roads have no cash booth where a missed turn can be corrected. Cameras record the vehicle plate and the trip is matched to a toll account or paid through the electronic service. That makes the official domain, plate accuracy and payment timing more important than the road sign alone.

The current roads

NZTA currently lists Northern Gateway, Tauranga Eastern Link and Takitimu Drive. Check the live official page for locations and charges before travel rather than carrying an old price into a new trip. A route planner can show the road, but NZTA is the source for the toll and payment method.

Account or pay as you go

An account can cover repeated travel and multiple chosen vehicles. Pay as you go suits an occasional trip. In either case, confirm the plate and country of registration carefully; paying for the wrong plate does not settle the recorded trip.

NZTA's toll terms say the toll is due at the toll point and that enforcement is not taken when a casual trip is paid within five working days. The current “do it online” page says a trip can be bought or paid up to ten days after use. Those statements describe different legal and system windows. The low-risk rule is simple: pay before or promptly after travel, and no later than five working days.

Open NZTA's tolling page yourself. Do not use a sponsored result or alarming text link and assume the page is official because it displays a road photograph. Check the government domain before entering a plate or card.

If the normal window has passed

Try the official buy-or-pay service if the trip was within its displayed acceptance window. After that, the registered person may receive a toll payment notice with the trip, toll and an administration fee. The notice has its own number and 28-day response period.
