Do it before the date, not after

The expiry date on the card is the date. There is no grace period on a driver licence, and the day after it expires you are driving unlicensed — an offence enforced independently of how you were driving, and one that gives an insurer grounds to look hard at a claim.

Renewal is normally available for a window before the expiry date, so you do not have to wait for the last week. If you are travelling, moving, or heading into a busy period, the sensible move is to renew at the front of that window rather than the back of it.

What to take, and the things that cause a second trip

Two things are worth knowing about the photograph, because they send people away. Head coverings are accommodated where they are worn for religious reasons, but your face has to be visible. And glasses are generally fine, though you may be asked to remove them if there is glare — which is not an invitation to leave them at home.

If it has already expired

How much of a problem this is depends entirely on how long ago. The requirements escalate in steps: a licence a few weeks out of date is a straightforward renewal, while one that has been expired for a long stretch stops being a renewal at all and is handled as a new application, potentially with tests attached.

They are exactly the kind of figure that changes, and getting one wrong here would mean someone drives to a counter expecting a photograph and gets told to book a theory test. Whatever the answer, do not drive to the agent on the expired licence. Get a lift.

Renewals that come with extra requirements

Age. From a certain age, renewal involves a medical certificate from your doctor and a shorter renewal cycle. That appointment, not the paperwork, sets the timeline — the detail is on the senior renewal page.

Health changes. If something has changed medically since your last renewal — vision, seizures, a cardiac event, a condition affecting alertness or limb function — that has to be declared. The usual outcome is a condition recorded on the licence rather than the loss of it, but declaring it is not optional.

Endorsements. Passenger, vehicle recovery, driving instructor and similar endorsements run on their own cycles with their own requirements, and they do not automatically renew alongside the licence. If you hold one, check its status at the same time — see the endorsements page.

Being overseas when it expires. This is the awkward one, because the transaction requires you to be physically present. There is no remote renewal. Plan around it before you go rather than discovering the problem from another country.

While you wait for the card

You are normally issued a temporary licence document at the counter, valid for driving until the card arrives. Keep it with you — it is the thing police will ask for, and a photograph of it is not the same as carrying it.

If the card has not arrived after a reasonable period, contact the agent that processed the application first rather than NZTA. They hold the transaction record, and most delivery problems turn out to be an address captured incorrectly at the counter.
