Ask about renewing instead, before you pay for a replacement

This is the piece of advice worth the visit to this page. Replacement and renewal are separate transactions with separate fees. If your licence was going to expire in the near future anyway, replacing it now means paying twice within months.

Agents will usually raise this if you mention the expiry date, but they are processing what you asked for, and if you asked for a replacement that is what you get. Say out loud when you reach the counter: "my licence expires in X — am I better renewing?" What to bring when the thing that proves who you are is the thing you lost

This is the circular problem at the heart of a replacement, and it is why people get turned away.

You need acceptable identity documents — originals, not photographs on a phone, not photocopies. A passport does most of the work if you have one. If you do not, the accepted combinations of documents are published by NZTA and are stricter than most people assume; check them on the replacing your licence page before you make the trip rather than turning up with a power bill and hoping.

If your name has changed since the licence was issued, bring the document that proves the change as well — marriage or civil union certificate, deed poll, or the equivalent. A mismatch between the name in NZTA's record and the name on your identity document stops the transaction dead.

Bring the glasses or contact lenses you actually drive in, too. There is an eyesight screen at the counter as part of the application, and being screened without your usual correction is a well-worn route to an unnecessary second visit.

A damaged card counts

You do not have to lose a licence to need a replacement. A card that is cracked, delaminated, run through the wash, or worn to the point the photograph is unclear is a card that can be questioned at a roadside stop, at a rental counter or by anyone using it to verify your age. The transaction is the same one, and you hand the damaged card over as part of it.

Driving while you wait

You are normally issued a temporary licence document at the counter. Carry it. It is what you produce if you are stopped, and a photograph of it on your phone is not the same thing.

If you are stopped before you have made it to an agent at all, be straightforward about it. An officer can check your entitlement against the register, and not carrying a licence is treated differently from not holding one. That is discretion, though, not a right, and it is not a plan.

Two situations where the temporary document is not enough on its own:

Sitting a practical driving test. Testing officers verify your identity and inspect your current licence before the drive. If your card is missing, sort the replacement before the test rather than arriving to find the appointment cannot proceed — that is a lost fee and a lost slot, and rebooking runs on the same mechanics described on the failed test page.

Hiring a vehicle. Rental companies set their own document policies and many will not accept a temporary document. That is company policy rather than national rule, and it varies between operators. Ask before you book, not at the desk.

If the card never turns up

Give it a reasonable stretch, then contact the agent that processed the application rather than NZTA. The agent holds the transaction record and can see what address was captured. Most non-arrivals are a typo made at the counter or a licence sent to a previous address, and both are fixed faster by the branch that keyed it in.

If it turns up after you have replaced it

The old card is no longer valid. Destroy it rather than keeping it in a drawer as a spare, and never carry both. A superseded licence in circulation is a document someone else can use, and producing the wrong one at a roadside stop creates a problem you do not need.
