Free tools for NZ vehicle owners
Four tools answer a decision without collecting an identifier: your WoF interval, the 28-day recheck deadline, whether an expired or failed vehicle may make the planned trip, and a 12-question theory practice with explanations. They run in your browser — no plate, licence or VIN, no saved score and no server call with your answers.
Most questions about vehicle admin in New Zealand have a definite answer that is buried in a rule rather than genuinely unknowable. These tools apply those rules so you do not have to. Start with the theory-test guide if a learner licence is the task, or the WoF guide if the vehicle record is the task.
All four work the same way: everything happens in your browser, nothing is sent anywhere, and none of them asks for a plate number. That last point is deliberate and it is worth being explicit about — a lot of sites in this space put a lookup box on the page because collecting identifiers is valuable, not because you need it to answer the question.
Which road-code topics need work?
This 12-question check mixes following distance, give-way rules, signals, restraints, alcohol, demerits and class 6 learner conditions. It explains each answer and reports the topics missed. It is intentionally smaller than the official 35-question test and does not claim to predict a pass.

Use the result with the full theory-practice guide and finish with NZTA or Drive's current official material before booking.
When is my WoF due?
The inspection rules change on 1 November 2026 and again on 1 November 2027, phased by first registration date. This works out which band your vehicle falls into and what your interval becomes.

The full explanation is on the WoF due date page, and every band is set out in what changes on 1 November 2026.
How long do I have for a free recheck?
If your vehicle failed its inspection, you get one free recheck within 28 days, provided you go back to the same inspecting organisation. It can be a different branch of the same company, but not a different company. Miss the window and you pay again for what counts as an entirely new inspection.

Am I allowed to drive right now?
The rules on driving with an expired or failed WoF are narrower than most people assume, and the exception that does exist is narrower still. There is no grace period, the infringement fee is $200, and the only legitimate trip is to a repairer or an inspection site — and only if the vehicle is safe to drive.

This tool applies the rules on WoF and rego status. It cannot tell you whether your vehicle is roadworthy, and it is not legal advice. If something feels wrong with the vehicle, the answer is a tow rather than a calculated risk.
What we are not building
We get asked for a plate lookup, and we are not going to build one. NZTA already has one, it works, and it is the right place for it: the query happens between you and the agency, with nobody in the middle keeping a copy.
The same goes for anything that would need your driver licence number or your VIN. Our editorial policy sets out the reasoning, along with the other things we deliberately do not publish — opening hours, fees and processing times among them — and why a confidently wrong figure is worse than an honest gap.
If a tool here gives you an answer that does not match what an inspection site or NZTA tells you, they are right and we want to know about it. Tell us and we will fix it.
