Book a New Zealand theory test
A theory test is not a stand-alone online quiz. You complete the learner-licence application through a driver licensing agent, meet the identity and eyesight requirements, pay the current official fee and sit the computer-based test. Check the agent's current service and opening details before travelling. Passing produces a temporary learner licence while the photo card is posted; it does not remove the learner conditions.
“Book the theory test” is common shorthand, but the official visit does more than run an exam. It is the application for a learner licence: identity is checked, an eyesight requirement is handled, a photograph and signature are captured where applicable, fees are paid, and the test is sat on the agent's system.
Choose the official route
Start on NZTA's current theory-test page and official agent finder. A search advertisement or a practice subscription is not a booking. Check the domain before entering identity or card details, and make sure the agent location offers driver licensing rather than only vehicle transactions or memberships.
Opening hours and service availability can change. Confirm them close to the appointment, especially if you need language or reading support, an unusual identity document, or time around work or travel.
Prepare the application, not only the answers
Use the current official checklist. Identity evidence must meet NZTA's requirements; a photograph of a document on a phone is not automatically a substitute. If your evidence uses different names, resolve the linking-document requirement before the visit. Bring corrective lenses if you need them for driving or the eyesight screen.
The fee belongs to the official application and test. KiwiVehicle does not take it, reserve a slot or issue a receipt. Current amounts should be checked on NZTA because fees can change.
Keep the booking confirmation and arrive with enough time for the application steps. A perfect practice score does not cure missing identity evidence or arriving at a counter that cannot complete the service.
At the agent
The theory test is computer-based, 35 questions and multiple choice. Car and motorcycle applicants need 32 correct; heavy-vehicle applicants need 33. Ask the agent in advance about available languages or reading assistance rather than assuming it can be arranged after the test starts.
If you pass, the temporary licence lets you begin driving or riding only within the conditions of that learner class. It is not permission to drive alone on a car learner licence. Read the conditions before leaving the counter and make the required L plates or supervisor part of the first trip plan.
