What to do after failing the NZ theory test
You can arrange another attempt through the driver licensing agent. NZTA states that there is no fee to rebook or change the test, but if you fail twice on the same day you must wait 10 working days before sitting it again. Confirm the current process with the agent. Use the result to review topic gaps; repeating a memorised set immediately is not the same as learning the applicable road-code rule.
A failed theory test is precise evidence: on that attempt, too many answers fell below the pass threshold. It does not tell you that you cannot learn the code, and paying for the next available attempt without changing preparation wastes the only useful part of the result.
Rebooking and the same-day limit
Follow the agent's rebooking instructions. NZTA's current theory-test guidance says there is no fee to rebook or change the test. It also says that after failing twice on the same day, you must wait 10 working days before another attempt. That stand-down is counted in working days, not ten calendar dates.
Do not turn the rule into a target of two rapid attempts. A second sitting makes sense only when the first failure was narrow and you can genuinely correct the misunderstood rules. Agent availability and closing time can also prevent a same-day resit.
Build a useful error list
Immediately write down the topics that caused uncertainty without trying to reproduce protected question wording. Include correct guesses. Group them: signs, give way, following distance, speed, driver responsibility, sharing the road, or specialist motorcycle/heavy material.
For each group, return to the current official code and write the rule in your own words. Then answer a changed scenario. If the original involved a dry road, make it wet; if one vehicle was turning, make it continue straight; if age controlled the answer, put someone on the other side of the threshold.
Do not buy a “guaranteed pass” or leaked-question pack after a failure. No third party can change your result, and an undated bank can preserve an obsolete rule. Use NZTA or Drive for official practice and verify any other service's source and review date.
Use the waiting period well
Space practice across several days. Mix topics so the heading does not reveal the rule. Stop when you can explain why each alternative is wrong, not when the right button looks familiar. The 12-scenario check is a starting diagnostic, while the road-code study plan turns weak topics into a repeatable routine.
Before the resit, check the booking and identity arrangements again. The test result and the licence application are parts of the same agent visit; preparation needs to cover both.
