Checking your own licence

Look at the card first. The class, the stage, the conditions and the expiry date are all printed on it, and for the overwhelming majority of questions that is the answer. Where you sit on the learner-to-full ladder is on there too.

If the card is missing, damaged, or you suspect the record and the card disagree, a driver licensing agent can look up your record when you present acceptable identity documents in person. That in-person requirement is the point: the whole system is built so that your licence record cannot be pulled by someone who merely knows your name and date of birth.

Two things a licence status check will not tell you. It will not tell you about demerit points, which are tracked separately and covered on the demerits and fines page. And it will not tell you the result of a driving test you have just sat — that comes from the testing officer at the time, and if it did not go your way the failed test page covers what happens next.

How the employer-side check actually works

Driver Check is a service organisations register for rather than a page anyone can visit and search. NZTA sets out what it covers, who is eligible to use it and how access is arranged on its driver check page.

The structural points worth understanding before you go looking:

It runs on consent. A driver being checked has agreed to it, usually as part of an employment agreement or an onboarding form. An organisation cannot use the service to satisfy private curiosity about someone who does not work for them.

It shows status, not history. The purpose is to answer "is this person licensed for this vehicle right now", not to produce a character reference. Convictions and infringement history are a different category of information with a different process attached.

It is not free-form. You are confirming details you already hold against the register, not searching for a person you cannot identify.

Why employers use it instead of sighting the card

A card in a wallet proves what was true on the day it was printed. It does not tell you whether the licence has since been suspended, whether a condition has been added, or whether the holder has moved from restricted to full — or the other way.

For a business, the exposure is real. Putting an employee behind the wheel of a vehicle they are not licensed for is a health and safety problem and an insurance problem simultaneously, and the insurer's question after a crash is not what the employer believed but what the register said. That is the case a register-based check exists to answer.

For a driver, the practical consequence is worth knowing: if you move from a restricted to a full licence, or a condition changes, tell your employer. They may well find out anyway at the next check, and the version where they find out from you is better.

What to do when a check comes back wrong

Occasionally the register disagrees with the card — a class that should have been added and was not, a condition that should have come off, a name spelled differently from the one on your identity documents. That is a data problem, and it is fixed at an agent counter with identity documents in hand, not by arguing with the employer who ran the check.

Take the card, take the documents, and ask the agent to look at the record rather than simply reprinting what is already there. Corrections to an existing record are handled differently from new applications and are not always charged the same way — the fees page covers where the current schedule sits.

If your licence has genuinely lapsed, or a class you thought you held has expired, that is a renewal or a fresh application rather than a correction, and it is better to discover it this way than at a roadside stop.
