New Zealand theory-test questions explained
The official theory test is 35 computer-based multiple-choice questions. Car and motorcycle applicants need at least 32 correct; heavy-vehicle applicants need 33. Questions cover the applicable road code, including specialist material for the licence type. NZTA can update the question set, so use the current code and official practice rather than memorising an undated “all questions” list.
The official format is simple enough to describe: 35 questions, multiple choice, on a computer at a driver licensing agent. The difficult part is the breadth. A small number of errors can use up the whole margin, and a practice service that repeats the same set can make recognition look like knowledge.
General and specialist material
NZTA separates general questions from specialist questions. The applicable code depends on the licence class: a car applicant needs the general road code; a class 6 applicant must know motorcycle rules and conditions; a heavy-vehicle applicant must prepare for heavy-specific material and a higher pass mark.
This is why borrowing a friend's car-only practice login is not a complete plan for a heavy or motorcycle test. Shared rules remain useful, but the vehicle-specific section is not optional.
What a good practice question contains
A useful item has a current source, one defensible answer, plausible alternatives and an explanation that names the controlling rule. A picture should make the road layout clearer, not hide an assumption. A number such as a distance, age or time needs a source and review date.
A weak question gives only “correct” or “wrong”, uses a rule from another country, or claims to be a leaked official bank. It may teach the position of an option rather than the reason.
Be cautious with a site that asks for a driver-licence number or payment card merely to reveal a practice score. Neither is needed to explain road-code questions. The official application is a separate transaction through an agent.
Review guesses as misses
After each set, split results into three groups: knew and could explain; correct but guessed; and wrong. The last two groups both need review. Find the rule in the road code, paraphrase it, then answer a different scenario using the same rule.
Do not spend the whole session chasing a percentage. Track topics: give way, signs, speed and distance, responsibilities, sharing the road, and the specialist code. A score improves when the topic gaps close; it can also improve temporarily because the same questions return.
