Work out your eligibility date first

Two things have to be true before a booking is worth paying for. You hold a current restricted licence, and you have held it for the minimum period NZTA sets before the full test becomes available to you.

That period is shorter if you have completed an approved advanced driving course. If you have done one, or are thinking about doing one, the arithmetic changes and it changes by a meaningful amount — the defensive and advanced driving courses page covers which courses qualify and when the cost stacks up.

Get the current period from NZTA's own full licence page, count forward from the issue date printed on your restricted card, and book for a date after that. We do not publish the period here, because a stale figure on this page would cost someone a test fee, and it is the sort of number that gets adjusted without fanfare.

Choosing a slot that works in your favour

There is no national waiting time for practical tests, and anyone who quotes you one is generalising from their own city. Large-centre testing locations run busy and swing with the school year; smaller centres often have slots inside a week.

Time of day is worth some thought at this stage in particular, because the full test is assessing hazard perception and a dead-quiet 8am route gives you fewer opportunities to demonstrate it — but also fewer opportunities to get it wrong. Neither is objectively better. What matters is that you have driven that location, at that hour, before. Booking a slot at a testing location you have never driven to is a solvable problem: drive the surrounding streets on a weekend beforehand.

Changing, cancelling and no-shows

Bookings can be moved. The rule that matters is the notice period, which is set by NZTA and printed on your confirmation. Outside it, the fee normally carries over to the new booking or is refunded. Inside it — or if you simply do not appear — the fee is gone and the next attempt is paid for again.

The two things that force late changes are illness and the test vehicle becoming unavailable or failing its WoF. Both are foreseeable enough to plan around: know whose car you could use instead, and check the WoF and rego dates on your intended vehicle a week out rather than the night before. Note the phone channel for changes when you book. When the test is tomorrow, the online system is not always the fastest route.

Getting there, and what happens after

You hold a restricted licence, so you can drive yourself to this one. Just remember the passenger and overnight conditions still apply on that journey, and still apply on the way home if the result does not go your way.

If you pass, the licence itself is a separate transaction at an agent counter — photo, identity documents, application fee — not something the testing officer completes.
