Class 5 heavy combination licence
Class 5 covers combination vehicles over 25,000kg GCW and includes vehicles in classes 1–4. You need full class 4 first: hold it six months if under 25, or three months if 25+ unless an approved accelerated learner course removes that wait. After class 5 learner, gain the full class through six months plus a practical test, or an approved full class 5 course. Endorsements and commercial work requirements remain separate.
The heavy-vehicle overview maps the prerequisite sequence. Class 5 is the broadest heavy-vehicle class, but reaching it is still a sequence. A full class 1 alone is not enough, and an employer's internal sign-off cannot add the class to a driver licence.
Confirm that the vehicle is a class 5 combination
The core threshold is a combination over 25,000kg GCW. Use the legal gross combined weight and vehicle definitions, not the load carried on one trip. Class 3 covers the medium combination band; classes 2 and 4 principally describe rigid vehicles and specified light-trailer combinations.
Full class 5 includes classes 1 through 4. That does not mean class 3 is the prerequisite: NZTA's current progression uses full class 4 before class 5 learner.
From class 4 to the learner
Under age 25, hold full class 4 for six months. At 25 or over, the ordinary period is three months; successful completion of the approved accelerated class 5 learner course can remove that three-month requirement.
Apply at a driver licensing agent and complete the current theory, identity, eyesight, medical and fee steps. Plan supervised access to an appropriate combination before choosing the time-and-test route.
Reach full class 5
One route is to hold class 5 learner for at least six months and pass the practical test. The other is successful completion of an approved full class 5 course, which removes that learner- period and separate practical-test requirement.
A short provider advertisement saying “class 5 in a day” describes course delivery, not the whole prerequisite chain. Verify full class 4 status, age-based eligibility, learner application, medical evidence and exactly which approved certificate is included.
Finally add the work requirements. D can be needed for dangerous goods, P for passenger service, and operator, work-time, vehicle certification or employer rules can apply beyond the driver's class. A class 5 card is necessary for the vehicle, not sufficient for every job using it.
