Class 3 heavy vehicle licence

Short answer

Class 3 covers a combination vehicle with GCW from 12,001kg to 25,000kg and also vehicles in classes 1 and 2. It is not the normal prerequisite for class 4: both class 3 and class 4 branch from full class 2. Before class 3 learner, hold full class 2 for six months if under 25, or three months if 25+ unless the approved accelerated learner route applies. Full class 3 is reached by the learner/practical route or an approved course.

The heavy-vehicle overview shows the rigid and combination branches. Class 3 is easy to skip because it is not on the usual rigid-truck path to class 5. It exists for medium combination vehicles: the towing setup and gross combined weight make it a different entitlement from class 2 or class 4.

Confirm the combination

NZTA's core class 3 band is GCW 12,001kg to 25,000kg. GCW is the gross combined weight of the vehicles making up the combination, not the load carried today or a remembered empty weight. Check the tow vehicle, trailer and their legal ratings.

Some lighter combinations are covered by classes 1 or 2, so do not conclude that every truck and trailer requires class 3. Use the current official “what you can drive” table and vehicle records for the exact setup.

Prerequisite and learner

You need full class 2 first. Under age 25, NZTA currently requires it to have been held for six months before class 3 learner. At 25 or over, the ordinary wait is three months; an approved accelerated class 3 learner course can remove that three-month prerequisite wait.

Apply for the learner class at a driver licensing agent and meet the heavy-theory, identity, eyesight and medical requirements. Do not confuse an accelerated learner-prerequisite course with the approved course used to gain the full class.

Getting full class 3

Either hold the class 3 learner for at least six months and pass the practical test, or complete the approved full class 3 course. The approved full course removes the separate minimum learner period and practical test for that class.

“Accelerated” can refer to two different effects: becoming eligible for the learner sooner when 25+, or gaining the full class through an approved course. Ask the provider which approval and certificate the quote covers.

Class 3 includes vehicles covered by classes 1 and 2, but it does not substitute for P, D or another endorsement required by the work. If the intended combination exceeds 25,000kg GCW, plan the class 4 to class 5 path instead.

Frequently asked questions

What vehicles need class 3?
NZTA defines class 3 as medium combination vehicles with GCW from 12,001kg to 25,000kg, outside combinations already covered by a lower class. Use the current vehicle table for exceptions.
Do I need class 3 before class 4?
No. Class 3 and class 4 are different branches after full class 2: medium combination versus heavy rigid. Class 5 uses full class 4 as its prerequisite.
How long must I hold class 2?
Under 25, the current requirement is six months on full class 2 before class 3 learner. At 25 or over it is three months, with an approved accelerated learner course able to remove that three-month wait.
Does the trailer decide the class?
The complete combination and GCW matter, along with vehicle definitions and lower-class exceptions. Do not classify from the trailer's empty weight alone.
