New Zealand demerit points explained
Demerit points are added for specified driving offences and remain active for two years from the offence date. If you reach 100 or more active points within two years, your licence is suspended for three months once the suspension is served. Speed-camera offences do not add demerit points. Paying the associated infringement deals with the money; it does not buy the points off your record.
Demerit points and fines often arrive from the same offence, but they are not the same account. The fee is a debt to pay or challenge. The points are a licensing consequence recorded against the driver. Paying quickly does not reduce a valid point total, and delaying payment does not pause the point clock.
The rolling two-year window
Each set of points is tied to its offence date and remains active for two years. Imagine the total as a window moving forward one day at a time. An older offence can fall outside while a new one enters; there is no universal anniversary when every driver's total resets.
The threshold is 100 or more active points within that period. Reaching it leads to a three-month suspension, but the legal effect involves service of the suspension notice. Do not infer from an online total or an expected letter that you may keep driving indefinitely. Follow NZTA's current instructions and seek direct confirmation when service is unclear.
Not every offence carries the same points
Point values depend on the offence. Speed bands, licence-condition breaches and other specified offences can have different values. Use NZTA's current demerit table and the details on your notice; an old chart can be wrong after a rule change.
Speed-camera offences are a notable exception: NZTA says they do not carry demerit points. That does not mean the recorded speed is consequence-free. A fine can still be owed, while speeding detected by an officer can engage points or immediate-suspension rules depending on the facts.
No legitimate company can “wipe” valid demerit points for a fee. If the offence or driver is wrong, use the challenge or hearing process identified on the notice within its deadline. Do not pay a stranger for access to a supposed NZTA correction screen.
Keep offences and documents aligned
Record the offence date, notice number, issuing authority, points stated and payment or challenge deadline. If someone else was driving, do not simply swap names informally; use the official process and provide truthful evidence. A registered person's vehicle record and a driver's demerit record answer different questions.
